Saigon’s hẻm are the beating heart of the real Saigon, where people live, work, eat, shop and share everyday life.

These networks of narrow of Saigon alleys and residential lanes run behind the city’s main streets through neighborhoods where homes mix

with family businesses, cafés, food stalls, workshops, markets, shrines and pagodas.

Some alleys are busy and commercial; others become quiet residential lanes only a few meters from the traffic outside.

You can visit Ho Chi Minh City and see its famous landmarks, but to understand the real

pulse of Saigon, you need to walk its alleys.

In Saigon, the street isn't simply a way to get from one place to another. Much of everyday life happens right beside it.

People eat, drink, work, talk and rest on the pavement. Small businesses open directly onto the street, food is prepared outside, motorbikes arrive and disappear, deliveries are unloaded, things are repaired, and plastic stools can turn a few meters of sidewalk into a place to meet and spend time.

Walk slowly and watch for a while. What can look like chaos at first begins to reveal its own rhythm, with the street constantly changing through the day.

You don't need a particular destination to experience Saigon street life. Sometimes the street itself is the experience.

Cafés and coffee culture are part of the DNA of Saigon and Vietnam.

From sidewalk coffee on tiny plastic stools and neighborhood cafés to cafés inside old houses and traditional shophouses, and the city’s modern coffee culture, they are places to slow down, relax, meet friends, talk

Sometimes the smallest street-side café can tell you as much about everyday Saigon as the places you came to see.

It’s one of the simple pleasures that makes Saigon so much fun: find a seat, have a drink, talk for a while and enjoy the city happening around you.

Saigon isn't unusual because it is changing.

What makes it fascinating is how many different versions of the city exist side by side.

Old houses and shophouses, hẻm and traditional neighborhoods can sit surprisingly close

to glass towers, new developments and an entirely different way of city living.

Walk between them and the changes can happen within a few streets.

In central Ho Chi Minh City, French colonial architecture, Vietnamese modernist buildings, old houses, new and traditional shophouses and apartment buildings share the streets with modern towers and skyscrapers.

Some older buildings have found new lives as cafés, shops and creative spaces while the city grows around them.

Move into more traditional neighborhoods and Saigon changes again:

residential streets, local markets, small family businesses, pagodas and networks of hẻm

shape everyday life, with little of the high-rise city around you.

Then there is modern Saigon:

New high-rise neighborhoods, skyscrapers and riverfront developments, with parks, public spaces, cafés and modern city life creating a very different side of Ho Chi Minh City.

Walk through these different Saigons and experience the contrasts at street level, from neighborhoods that have changed relatively little to places that barely existed a generation ago.

The Saigon River and its canals are the veins of Ho Chi Minh City. For generations, waterways have moved people, goods and trade through Saigon, helping shape how the city developed and how its neighborhoods grew.

Take a riverside walk through a different side of Saigon, following rivers and canals through

local neighborhoods, old commercial areas and the modern city.

Bridges, boats, ferries, parks, cafés and waterside communities reveal how closely

everyday life remains connected to the water.

The Saigon River itself reaches far beyond the familiar central riverfront.

Saigon didn't simply grow beside its waterways.

It grew through them. To understand the city, follow the water as well as the streets.

Chợ Lớn, Saigon's Chinatown, offers a very different side of Ho Chi Minh City, shaped by generations of Chinese-Vietnamese migration, commerce, religion and food.

It isn't simply a historic Chinatown. It remains a living part of the city, where many of those traditions continue through everyday community life.

Explore busy markets and wholesale trading areas, old shophouses, traditional businesses and streets connected with Chinese and herbal medicine.

Bình Tây Market remains one of the best-known symbols of Chợ Lớn's long commercial history.

Temples, pagodas and assembly halls reveal another layer of the area, with Chinese architecture, incense-filled places of worship and traditions

that remain part of community life today.

Food is everywhere too, reflecting the Chinese-Vietnamese communities that helped shape this part of Saigon.

Buddhism is deeply woven into Saigon and Vietnamese life, and the city's pagodas offer much more than beautiful architecture.

Step inside Buddhist pagodas where people come to pray, light incense, make offerings and find a few quiet moments away from the streets outside.

Different Buddhist traditions, statues, architecture and rituals reveal the many influences that have shaped Buddhism in Vietnam over centuries.

Some are grand and famous; others sit quietly inside neighborhoods or behind busy streets. They are not simply historic buildings, but living places of worship and part of everyday Saigon.

Saigon isn't one continuous city experience.

Move from one neighborhood to another and the streets, architecture, food, businesses and rhythm of everyday life can change surprisingly quickly.

Some areas grow around markets and old residential streets, others around cafés, religious communities, apartment blocks, family businesses or the river.

Spend time exploring one local neighborhood or connect several contrasting areas and experience how quickly Saigon can change from one part of the city to another, each with its own character, rhythm and everyday life.

Before the heat and traffic take over, the streets are quieter, the air is cooler and the first

light across the Saigon River, canals and skyline can create some remarkably beautiful moments.

For couples, sunrise can also be wonderfully romantic.

Taking pictures together, sharing a special moment, or simply finding somewhere

peaceful to watch the sun rise over the city can become part of your own experience.

The waterways are already alive in the early hours.

Boats begin moving, the Saigon Waterbus crosses the river, crews are already working on the river and canals, birds gather around the water, and people walk or exercise along the banks.

Saigon is waking up, but hasn't yet reached full speed.

Away from the water, another side of Saigon is starting its day.

Local markets begin trading, breakfast stalls prepare food, cafés serve their first Vietnamese coffee, and parks and public spaces fill with people walking, exercising, practicing tai chi, playing

badminton, meeting friends or simply enjoying the early hours.

Then the transformation happens. Alleys come alive, shutters open, scooters multiply, and streets that felt almost peaceful a short time earlier become unmistakably Saigon.

A sunrise or early-morning walk isn't only about watching the sun come up.

It's a chance to experience the beauty, romance and everyday life of Saigon during those

few hours when the city shows a completely different side of itself.
